Add a page to a PDF online, for free
A blank page for handwritten notes, a forgotten appendix, a photo of a proof document, a Word letter: insert them before the first page, after the page of your choice or at the end. Everything is converted and assembled in your browser, with no account and nothing sent.

Add pages to a PDF in three steps
- 1
Open the PDF
Drag the document into the reader or pick it on your device: the “Insert pages” tool opens right away.
- 2
Choose what to insert
Blank pages, from 1 to 50, or the pages of a file: a PDF, a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file, an image or a photo, converted before insertion.
- 3
Choose where, then save
Before the first page, after the page of your choice or after the last one. Check the result, then download the completed PDF.
Everything happens in your browser: the file never leaves your device. Open in the reader
Add a page to a PDF, step by step
Adding a page to a PDF takes no paid software and no account: Certyneo Reader's “Insert pages” tool works in your browser, on a computer, tablet or phone. It slips blank pages or the pages of another file in wherever you want, then lets you check the result before saving it. Here is the full process, from the open document to the completed PDF.
- Open your document in the free online PDF reader, by drag and drop or from your files. If it is password-protected, enter the password: it is checked on your device.
- In the “Insert pages” tool, choose what you are adding: blank pages, from 1 to 50, or the pages of a file you select on your device.
- Choose the position: “Before the first page”, “After page” followed by a number, or “After the last page”.
- Confirm, then scroll through the document to check that the new pages are in the right place. If you made a mistake, the Undo button returns the document to how it was.
- Save or download the completed PDF. Until you do, nothing is final.
If the file to insert is not a PDF, a Word document or a photo for example, it is first converted to PDF on your device, then its pages are placed at the chosen position. So you do not have to convert it yourself beforehand.
What can you insert into a PDF?
The tool accepts far more than PDFs. That is what sets it apart from a simple file combiner: the item to add can come in almost any common office format, and it joins your document as PDF pages.
| What you insert | What ends up in the PDF | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Blank pages (1 to 50) | Empty pages at the chosen position | Handwritten notes, the back of a printout, a break between two parts |
| Another PDF | Its pages, slipped into the document | A forgotten appendix, an amendment, a supplementary document |
| Word document (.docx) | The document converted to PDF pages | Title page, cover letter, table of contents |
| Excel workbook (.xlsx) | The sheets converted to PDF pages | Figures table or budget attached to a report |
| PowerPoint presentation (.pptx) | The slides converted to PDF pages | Meeting deck added to meeting minutes |
| Text or RTF | The text laid out in pages | A quick note, an additional statement |
| JPG, PNG, TIFF image or HEIC photo | A page containing the image | Photographed proof document, ID card, scanned invoice |
For a photo taken with an iPhone, the HEIC format is supported directly: no need to go through a third-party app. If you only want to turn several photos into a standalone document, without slipping them into an existing PDF, the page to convert HEIC photos to PDF is a better fit.
Each insertion adds a single file. To add several items at different positions, simply repeat the operation: insertions are chained on the same document, and each one can be undone as long as you have not saved.
Where to put the pages: at the start, in the middle or at the end of the PDF
Choosing the position is the only real decision in the operation, and it is where most mistakes creep in. Three options are offered.
- “Before the first page”: the new pages open the document. It is the right choice for a title page, a transmittal slip or a table of contents.
- “After page” with a number N: the pages are inserted between page N and page N + 1. To slip an appendix between pages 4 and 5, enter 4. The value 0 amounts to inserting before the first page.
- “After the last page”: the pages complete the end of the document, like an appendix or a signature page.
The number to enter is that of the page as it appears in the reader, not the number printed at the bottom of the page. The two often differ: an unnumbered cover and table of contents shift everything else. If in doubt, locate the page in the reader's view before typing the number.
Another common trap: after a first insertion, all the following pages change number. If you need to add several items at different positions, start from the end of the document and work back toward the beginning: the numbers of the pages higher up do not move, and your reference points stay correct.
Add a blank page to a PDF: when is it useful?
A blank page may seem trivial, but it solves several concrete problems you run into when printing, annotating or assembling a file.
Leave room for handwritten notes
Before a meeting or a class, adding a blank page after each part of a handout lets you take notes by hand on the printed version, or with a stylus on a tablet, right next to the passage concerned.
Get double-sided printing right
When a document is printed double-sided, each chapter should often start on a right-hand page. A blank page inserted at the end of a chapter with an odd number of pages puts what follows back on the right side of the sheet. Same logic for a contract printed double-sided whose signature page must fall alone on a front side.
Visually separate the parts of a file
In a file made up of several documents, a blank page between two of them marks the break and prevents the first page of one document from being printed on the back of the last page of the previous one.
Conversely, if a scan left you with unwanted empty pages, the page to delete a blank page from a PDF does the opposite, with the same page-number syntax.
Insert a PDF into another one, a Word file or a photo
Inserting one PDF into another is the most common use: you received a complete report, and appendix 3 is missing, which belongs in the middle, not at the end. The tool places the pages of the second file exactly after the page you specify, without touching the rest of the document.
A title page written in Word
Many reports are produced as PDFs by business software, while the title page, with the client's name and the date, is easier to write in a word processor. Save the title page as .docx, then insert it “Before the first page”: it is converted on your device and placed at the front. If you would rather convert the document separately and also keep it as a PDF, use the page to convert a Word document to PDF.
A photographed proof document in a file
For an administrative file, a rental application or a reimbursement claim, one document is often missing that you only have as a photo: a tax notice, a payslip, a receipt. Photograph it, then insert the image at the expected place in the file. The resulting page contains the photo as it is: frame it well and check that it is legible before saving.
A conversion from Word, Excel or PowerPoint is a layout recomputed on your device: proofread the added pages before sending the document. If the output must be identical down to the pixel, first export the file to PDF from its original software, for example with File > Save As in Word, then insert that PDF.
Add, merge or organize: what is the difference?
Several of the reader's tools seem similar. They meet different needs, though, and choosing the right one saves unnecessary steps.
| Tool | What it does | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Insert pages | Slips blank pages or a file inside a document, at the chosen position | An item is missing at a specific place in an existing PDF |
| Merge | Puts several files end to end | You are assembling a file from complete documents |
| Organise | Reorders pages by drag and drop, on thumbnails | The pages are already there, but not in the right order |
| Delete pages | Removes the pages you specify | A page is extra, duplicated or empty |
If you are gathering five complete documents into a single file, merging several PDFs into one is faster. If a single item must go in the middle of a document, inserting is more direct. And if you inserted an appendix in the wrong place after saving, just rearrange the PDF's pages by drag and drop to move it.
Adding pages to a PDF the right way: the order of operations
Certyneo Reader's tools can be chained on the same document. The order in which you use them still matters, though, because some operations lock in a state of the file.
- Assemble first: insert, merge, delete and reorder until you have the complete document.
- Number next. Numbering added before an appendix is inserted would be wrong for all the following pages. Once the document is final, adding page numbers to the PDF gives correct numbering from start to finish.
- Protect if necessary, last or just before sending, for example to put a password on the PDF.
- Get it signed at the very end. Modifying a PDF that has already been electronically signed breaks the integrity the signature attests to: add all the pages before you have the PDF signed online, never after.
This last point is worth stressing: if an appendix is missing from a contract that has already been signed, good practice is to complete the document and then have it signed again, or to have the appendix signed as a separate document.
Why insert pages without uploading the document
The documents people complete are rarely trivial: a rental application with ID documents, a contract, payslips, a report for a client. With Certyneo Reader, neither the original PDF nor the inserted file leaves your device. Converting a Word file or a photo and assembling the pages are computed by your browser; Certyneo never receives, stores or views any of your files.
The tool is free, with no account, no added watermark and no limit on the number of uses. The only limit is size: 150 MB per file. For a heavier document, especially a high-resolution scan, compress it first.
If you often work offline, the same tools are available in the free desktop app, described in our guide to the free PDF reader for Windows 11; it also runs on Linux.
More questions
How many blank pages can I add at once?
From 1 to 50 per insertion. To add more, repeat the operation: each insertion adds to the previous one on the same document.
Can I add a page to a PDF on my phone?
Yes, in a recent browser on Android, iPhone or iPad, with no app to install. It is handy for slipping the photo of a proof document into a file just before sending it.
How do I insert several files at different positions?
Do one insertion per file, starting from the end of the document so that the numbers of the earlier pages do not change between two operations. Then check the whole thing before saving.
Is the inserted file changed or deleted from my device?
No. The tool reads the file you choose and copies its pages into your document; the original file stays as it is, where it is.

Adding pages to a PDF: frequently asked questions
Is my PDF sent to a server?
No. The document and the inserted file are processed by your browser, on your device. Certyneo never receives, stores or views your files.
Which files can I insert into a PDF?
Another PDF, but also a Word document, an Excel workbook, a PowerPoint presentation, a text file, a JPG, PNG or TIFF image, or an iPhone HEIC photo: it is converted to PDF before being inserted.
How do I add a blank page in the middle of a PDF?
Choose “Blank pages, this many:” and enter how many, then “After page” and the number of the page that should come before them. To put them at the start, choose “Before the first page”.
How is this different from merging PDFs?
Merging puts several files end to end. Inserting slips pages INSIDE a document, at the place you choose, and also accepts a blank page, a Word file or a photo.
Can I undo an insertion?
Yes, as long as you have not saved: the Undo button returns the document to how it was before the insertion.
Does this PDF need to be signed?
Send it for electronic signature in minutes: your signers sign from their phone, without creating an account.
