This Bill of Sale is made effective as of [saleDate] by and between [sellerName] ("Seller") and [buyerName] ("Buyer").
1. SALE OF PROPERTY. For good and valuable consideration, Seller hereby sells, transfers, and conveys to Buyer the following described property (the "Property"): [itemDescription].
2. PURCHASE PRICE. Buyer agrees to pay Seller the total sum of [purchasePrice], receipt of which is acknowledged by Seller upon execution of this Bill of Sale.
3. TRANSFER OF TITLE. Seller warrants that Seller is the lawful owner of the Property, that the Property is free of all liens and encumbrances, and that Seller has full right and authority to sell the Property. Title to the Property passes to Buyer upon payment in full.
4. "AS-IS" CONDITION. The Property is sold in "AS-IS, WHERE-IS" condition. Except for the warranty of title above, Seller makes no warranties, express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.
5. GOVERNING LAW. This Bill of Sale shall be governed by the laws of the State of [governingState].

What's inside this bill of sale
A bill of sale is the receipt that proves ownership of personal property has legally changed hands. This template covers the parties, a description of the item, the purchase price, a warranty that the seller owns the item free of liens, and an "as-is" disclaimer that protects the seller from later claims about condition. It's commonly used for vehicles, boats, trailers, equipment, livestock, and high-value personal items. Note that transferring a vehicle title usually also requires filing paperwork with your state's DMV.

Do I need a bill of sale?
For most private sales it's strongly recommended, and some states require one for vehicle transfers. It proves the transaction happened, on what date, and for how much — protecting both buyer and seller.
What does "as-is" mean?
It means the buyer accepts the item in its current condition, with no warranty about quality or performance. The seller still warrants that they legally own the item and that it's free of liens.
Does a bill of sale transfer a vehicle title?
No. A bill of sale records the transaction, but transferring a vehicle title requires submitting the title and required forms to your state's motor vehicle agency.
