Engagement and client care letters are signed in minutes via a secure link. The advanced signature (AES) records the client, the scope of the retainer and the time of signing, avoiding later disputes over fees.

Settlement agreements

Settlement agreements are generally form-free and can be signed with AES or QES. The eIDAS evidence report serves as an exhibit if validity is later challenged. (Statutory settlement agreements under ERA 1996, s. 203 additionally require the conditions and independent legal advice to be met.)

Where a document is executed as a deed, the Law Commission (2019) confirms the witness must be physically present when the signatory signs — even where both use electronic signatures (Law of Property (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1989, s. 1).
