What is the European digital identity wallet?
It is an application that each Member State must make available to its citizens and residents. It allows you to prove your identity online and present official documents, such as a driving license or diploma, by sharing only the necessary information. Its use is voluntary, and it must be recognized throughout the Union.
What does eIDAS 2 change for electronic signatures?
The three levels of signature and their legal effects are preserved. The novelty lies in identification: the wallet will offer a harmonized way to verify the identity of a signer throughout the Union, which facilitates access to qualified signatures. The regulation also clarifies the framework for remote management of signature creation devices.
What new trust services are being created?
The 2024 regulation adds several to the original list: electronic attestation of attributes, which allows certification of a quality or right, electronic archiving, electronic registers, and management of remote signature creation devices. Each can be provided in qualified form, with enhanced legal effects.
Will companies have to accept the wallet?
Some will, yes. The regulation requires its acceptance by public sector bodies and private actors required by law to use strong authentication, for example in banking, transport, energy or telecommunications, and by very large online platforms. For other companies, acceptance remains optional.
