Rotate a PDF and save the rotation, step by step

Rotating a PDF for good, that is, saving the rotation in the file and not just on screen, takes a few seconds with Certyneo Reader's “Rotate pages” tool. 1. Open the document in the free online PDF reader, by drag and drop or from your files. If it is password-protected, enter the password: it is checked on your device.
2. Choose the pages concerned. By default, the whole document rotates; to turn only a few pages, choose “Only some pages” and type their numbers.
3. Choose the direction: a quarter turn to the right, a half turn, or a quarter turn to the left.
4. Confirm and check the display: the pages immediately appear in their new orientation. If the result is not right, the Undo button restores the previous state.
5. Save or download the PDF. The rotation is now part of the file.

The whole operation takes place on your device: the document is not sent to any server, and Certyneo neither receives nor stores it.

PDF rotation on screen or saved: what is the difference?

This is the most frequent source of confusion. Almost every viewer and browser offers a button to rotate the page. That button only changes your view for the moment: close the file, reopen it or send it to someone, and the page shows up crooked again. Hence the very common search for a way to rotate a PDF and save the result.

In other words, if the document must be sent, archived or printed, only a saved rotation fixes the problem once and for all. The viewer's button is still useful for glancing at a sideways table while reading; as soon as someone else has to open the file, or you will have to reopen it yourself in a week, save the rotation in the PDF.

Which rotation direction should you choose?

The tool offers three angles, which cover every case of a badly oriented page. The simplest way is to look at which way the text reads on screen.

If you pick the wrong direction, do not worry: undo before saving, or simply apply the opposite rotation. A quarter turn to the right followed by a quarter turn to the left returns the page exactly to how it was.

Rotate a single page or a few pages of a PDF

Many documents mix orientations: a portrait report with two wide landscape tables, a batch of scans in which a few sheets went through upside down. Rotating the whole file would be pointless; you need to target only the pages concerned.

Choose “Only some pages” and type the numbers using the syntax shared by all the reader's tools:

• “4” for a single page;
• “3-6” for a range of pages;
• “8-” to go from page 8 to the end, “-3” for the first three;
• “2, 7, 10-12” to combine, with commas or semicolons. A number entered twice is counted only once.

Pages not listed do not move. If the pages to turn do not all need the same direction, make several passes: first the ones that need a quarter turn to the right, then the ones that need a half turn. Turn a PDF the right way up: the most common cases

An upside-down or sideways scan

The scanner or copier does not know which way you placed the sheet. All it takes is one original placed upside down to get an inverted page in the middle of a batch. Find its number in the reader, then apply a half turn to that page alone.

With some document feeders, all the back sides come out upside down. The page syntax offers no shortcut for even pages: type their numbers one after another, “2, 4, 6, 8”, then apply a half turn. For a long document, the thumbnail view of the “Organise” tool helps you spot them at a glance.

A wide table printed in landscape appears sideways when you scroll through the report on screen. Rotate it for on-screen reading; if the document is meant for printing, check the output first, because a landscape page may actually be intended as it is.

Why rotating a PDF is lossless

Rotating a page does not redraw it. For each page, a PDF contains an indication of the orientation in which to display it: the tool simply changes that indication. The text, images, links and layout stay strictly identical, with no recompression at all. The text remains searchable and selectable as before.

That is also why the operation is reversible at any time, even after saving: just rotate again in the other direction to get the original page back, with no degradation whatsoever.

One precaution, however, for electronically signed documents: any change to a PDF that has already been signed, even a rotation, breaks the integrity the signature attests to. Turn the pages the right way up before you have the document signed online, never after.

Rotate a PDF before cropping, numbering or making a scan searchable

4. Number last. The number is placed on the displayed page, so in the right spot even on a rotated page; but the document still needs to be complete for you to add page numbers to the PDF without errors.

If the final document must join a larger file, you can then combine several PDFs into a single file, or on the contrary extract the pages you need into a new PDF to send only the essentials.

The tool's limits, and how to work around them

The tool does one thing and does it cleanly, but it is better to know its limits before you start.

• Rotation is done in quarter turns: 90°, 180° or 270°. A scanned page that is slightly tilted, by a few degrees, is not straightened. The simplest fix is to scan it again with the sheet pressed firmly against the edge of the glass.
• The file must not exceed 150 MB. Beyond that, compress or split it first.
• A password-protected PDF must be opened with that password before any change.
• Rotation applies to the whole page: you cannot rotate a single image or paragraph inside a page.

Why does my PDF show up crooked again when I had rotated it?

You probably used the rotate button of your viewer or browser, which only changes the display. Do it again with the “Rotate pages” tool, then save the PDF: the rotation will be written into the file.

Does rotation change the file size?

Hardly at all: only the display orientation of each page is changed; the page content is neither redrawn nor recompressed.

Can I rotate pages in different directions in one go?

Each pass applies a single direction to the chosen pages. For different directions, make one pass per direction, or turn the pages one by one in the “Organise” tool, while seeing the thumbnails.

Does a signature on the page rotate with it?

A scanned handwritten signature is part of the page image: it rotates with the page, without loss. An electronic signature, however, does not survive a change to the file, which is why you should rotate before getting the document signed.
