Frequently asked questions about Bates numbering
What is Bates numbering for?
To point at a page unambiguously. In a file gathering exhibits from several sources, each one already carries its own pagination: « page 3 » means nothing, « DUPONT000147 » means one page in the world. That is why the identifier is unique, sequential and never reused.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The numbering is stamped inside your browser. Certyneo never receives, stores or reads your document, and adds no promotional mention.
If I only number some pages, does the counter skip?
No, deliberately. The counter follows the pages you produce, not their original position: stamping pages 2, 5 and 9 yields …001, …002, …003. A production is the sequence of pages you file; gaps in the numbers would suggest missing exhibits.
Why six digits by default?
Because fixed-width padding makes identifiers sort as text and easy to read aloud. You can pick another width; if the counter exceeds it, the label grows rather than being truncated — two pages sharing one identifier would be the only real defect of this numbering.
Can the stamp cover the page content?
It sits in the margin, with no white box behind it: hiding part of a filed exhibit would be an alteration. If your content runs into the corner, pick another one — six positions are offered.
