Convert PDF to Word online, step by step

The tool works in any recent browser, on a computer, tablet or phone, with no software to install and no account to create. Here is the full process, from the PDF you received to a Word document ready to edit.

1. Open your PDF in the reader at the top of this page, by drag and drop or from your files. If it is protected, enter its password: it is checked on your device.
2. The Convert tool appears. Leave “Word document (.docx)” selected. The two other outputs, Excel and PDF/A, are covered further down this guide.
3. Click Convert. Conversion takes from one to a few seconds per page, depending on how powerful the device is and how dense the document is.
4. The .docx file downloads with your PDF’s name. Open it in your word processor, check the layout, then save it under the name of your choice.

What the conversion carries over from your PDF

A PDF is designed to look the same everywhere, not to be edited: it contains no paragraphs, tables or styles, only pieces of text placed at precise coordinates, with a font and a size. Converting a PDF to Word therefore means rebuilding the document’s structure from those positions. Here is what Certyneo Reader reconstructs.

The result is a real word-processing document: you can fix a sentence, add a paragraph or change a figure in a table, and the text reflows by itself, which is impossible in a PDF.

What the conversion does not carry over, and what to do

No converter reproduces a complex PDF perfectly, and it is better to know in advance where to look. Here are this one’s limits, stated plainly.

• Images placed within the text (logo, photo, chart) are not carried over: reinsert them in Word from their original file, or from a screenshot of the page.
• A multi-column layout, such as a brochure or a newspaper article, is carried over line by line: check the order of the paragraphs.
• The PDF’s headers and footers become ordinary paragraphs at the top and bottom of each page.
• Links, form fields and annotations are not carried over: only the text is.
• A table with merged cells or tightly packed columns may be split differently from the original.

If all you need is to fix a few words — an amount, a date, a name —, do not convert: edit the text directly in the PDF, and the original layout stays intact. Convert a scanned PDF to Word

A scanned or photographed document contains only one image per page: there is no text to convert. Converted as it is, it gives a Word document made of images, true to the eye but impossible to edit.

The fix takes two steps. First, text recognition (OCR) reads the image and adds invisible text to the PDF, aligned with the words. Then the Word conversion picks up that text like any other text. Why convert without uploading the file

Most online converters work by sending your PDF to their servers, where the conversion takes place, before sending the Word file back to you. The document therefore passes through a third party, which keeps it for a more or less clear period, sometimes in another country.

For a contract, a payslip, an ID document, a medical report or a client file, that is a real risk: a leak if the provider has an incident, GDPR obligations, and professional confidentiality for a lawyer, an accountant or a healthcare professional.

Which PDF to Word converter should you choose?

There are several ways to convert a PDF to Word. They differ mainly in where the document is processed and in what they cost.

For a confidential document, the deciding question is the first column: a file that never leaves your device cannot leak from a third party’s server.

Fixing the most common problems

The converted text is made of meaningless characters

Some PDFs use fonts with no character mapping table: they display correctly, but their text is unreadable for software. Treat the document like a scan: run OCR on every page, then convert.

A table is split incorrectly

Columns are inferred from the alignment: a table with very tight columns or merged cells may be split differently. Fix it in Word, or try the Excel conversion, which is often easier to read for a table of figures.

The layout is shifted

The margins of the resulting document are 1.5 cm, and Word reflows the text in its own way. Adjust the margins and line spacing in your word processor, or keep the original PDF for sharing and the Word file for editing.

Once the document has been reworked and exported back to PDF, it often still needs signing: sign your PDF online, with recognised legal validity.
