How to apply for an EIN

Getting an EIN is free and, online, takes minutes. Here are the three official routes — and why you should never pay a third party for one.

The EIN is free — always apply through the IRS

An Employer Identification Number is issued only by the IRS, at no cost. Many third-party websites charge a fee to “obtain” one for you; you never need them. There are three official ways to apply: online, by fax, or by mail.

1. Apply online (fastest)

If your business's principal is located in the US and you have a valid taxpayer ID, the IRS online EIN application is the fastest route — you complete it in one session and receive your EIN immediately at the end. The application is available during IRS operating hours and must be finished in a single sitting, as it times out after inactivity.

2. Apply by fax or mail (Form SS-4)

You can also submit IRS Form SS-4. By fax, expect your EIN in about four business days if you include a return fax number. By mail, processing typically takes around four weeks. These routes suit applicants who can't use the online tool, including some international applicants.

3. After you get your EIN

Store the IRS confirmation notice (CP 575) safely — banks and vendors will ask for it. Use your EIN to open a business bank account, complete W-9s for clients, hire employees, and file taxes. Pair it with a written operating agreement or contractor agreements to keep your business paperwork airtight.

Frequently asked questions

How fast can I get an EIN?

Immediately with the IRS online application. By fax it's about four business days; by mail, roughly four weeks.

Can I apply for an EIN without an SSN?

Yes, in many cases. Applicants without an SSN or ITIN generally apply by fax or mail with Form SS-4 rather than online.

Should I pay a service to get my EIN?

No. The IRS issues EINs for free. Paid services simply file the same free application on your behalf.
